Celina Schroeder
*07.09.1996, is a photographer with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from UNSW in Sydney and a diploma in branding from WDKA in the Netherlands. The Swiss artist has already exhibited in institutions such as the Nederlands Fotomuseum and at PhotoSchweiz 23 and also likes to question traditional photography with her art.
The work “What Is Healthy” was presented to the public twice in 2019 in a solo exhibition format. The young artist’s aim was to question the prejudices of the healthy, scarless beauty ideals. Schroeder, herself scarred by life, is also a representative of women’s rights and equality and with this work strives to draw attention to the problem of domestic violence.
Schroeder’s work is intended to have a motivating and encouraging effect and was first presented in a continuation in
2023 in the Photobastei in Zurich in a mixed media format. There she also met director Barbara Miller, who was interested in her work and is planning a documentary about her work. In the collage-like revised version of “What Is Healthy”, the focus should be even more on healing, which may penetrate from the inside through the creativity of painting to the outside and should cover up the sad truth of the scars. A tribute to the person who is allowed to grow mentally and spiritually.
The revised version of the series is a masterpiece that may represent the last phase of the healing process, and at the same time questions based on the essay “On Photography” by Susan Sontag, which photographs as a medium to present reality. Other inspirations for Schroeder are Nan Goldin, Michael Wolf and Stephen Gill (Best Before End).
The artist at work
In the first collaboration between the two artists, Celina Schröder selected three images from Jon Austrones’ Flickr. He had them printed and framed in large format by a top-quality printing company. Now Celina Schröder began her artistic work. By painting over and adding to the content, Austrones’ SL photos took on an entirely new meaning.
The first results of the collaboration between CELINA SCHROEDER and JON AUSTRONE have been presented at the exhibition MAKE ART NOT WAR in Zurich, Switzerland. The pictures will be in the store soon.
